【專輯介紹】
Though some may still consider them Radiohead mimics, obviously Muse continuesto strike a nerve with their alternative hard rockaudience, here releasingtheir third album of heavy guitars, haunted harmonics, and paranoid musings inAbsolution. Frontman Matt Bellamy and company stick tothe same disturbed, andsometimes disturbing, formula that's worked in the past:the emotionalintensity and style of Radiohead, a rock thunder descended fromBlack Sabbath, and the baroque drama of Queen. Longtime producer John Leckiesits this oneout, and in steps indie über-engineer Rich Costey. With Costeymanning thedesk, the music feels more polished and slick, but less epic andraw. Longtimefans won't miss a beat though, because Bellamy delivers the sameThom Yorkevocal impersonation for which he's known, and continues the sameanthemicposturing he's lifted from Freddie Mercury. With song titles andsubject matterfueled by fear of the apocalypse and worries about infidelitiesand randommurders, the subject matter is as gloriously pretentious and lovablyunlovableas ever. Newcomers to the band should expect killer guitarsreminiscent ofjackhammers and chainsaws, bloodcurdling choruses, and of course, tenderpassages of falsetto. A recurring motif of racing samplers suggestsnothingless than a rock opera version of the score to Koyaanisqatsi, and thenthereare the occasional spooky moments where funky rhythms mingle with heavymetalguitars, suggesting a progressive Italian zombie flick soundtrack. There'slittlepoint in selecting highlights, because other than some slow moments thatfeeltacked on, there's not much variation in theme or mood. Many listenerswillprobably prefer to tackle the album in small doses, and only themostheadstrong won't require a breather. Muse continues to makeunrelentinghardcore art rock; Absolution is a tad cheesy, a bit too grandiosein itsambitions, bursting at the seams with too many ideas, and thus exactlywhat anyMuse fan craves.
