2005年夏，Def Jam公司發行了Rihanna的首支單曲《Pon de Replay》，而這首歌曲同時也是Rihanna首張專輯《Music of the Sun》中的主打單曲。由Evan Rogers和Carl Sturken製作的《Pon de Replay》在發行之後大受歡迎，勇奪Billboard Hot 100單曲榜亞軍，僅惜敗于前輩瑪麗亞。凱麗（Mariah Carey）的14周冠軍單曲《We Belong Together》。這支單曲的成功使年輕的Rihanna在美國一夜之間家喻戶曉。
2006年，Rihanna的第二張個人專輯《A Girl Like Me》面世》，首周名列Billboard 200專輯榜第五位。
