先後於耶魯大學及劍橋大學取得碩士及博士學位。目前是倫敦皇家內科醫學院的研究員，以及倫敦大學學院醫學史的榮譽退休教授，專攻瘧疾史和演化論對醫學的影響。威廉‧拜能著作等身，包括《醫學史：極簡入門》（The History of Medicine: A Very Short Introduction, 2008）、合著有《形塑人類文明的80種植物》（Remarkable Plants That Shape Our World, 2014）、《文藝復興時期的的人體文化史》（A Cultural History of the Human Body in the Renaissance, 2014）並主編《醫學史百科指南》（Companion Encyclopedia of the History of Medicine, 1993；與Roy Porter共同主編）及《牛津科學引文辭典》（The Oxford Dictionary of Scientific Quotations, 2005）。
