Was / were + V-ing
1. 強調過去的一點或一段時間所進行的動作
1 He was standing there at 6:00 last evening. 昨晚 6.00 時 他正站在那兒。
2. He was reading newspapers when the telephone rang. 電話響時 他正在讀報。
2. 事件同時平行發生
(while, at the time)
While I was working in the garden, my wife was cooking dinner.
~當我在庭院工作時 我太太正在烹調晚餐。
比較:
He was reading newspapers when the telephone rang.
When +S+V, S+Ving / While S +Ving ,S+V (一件事突然發生,那一刻在做??)
While S+ Ving, S+Ving.(二件事平行發生)
3. 過去一直不斷重覆的動作
He was always sleeping in the class last semester. 上個學期他總是在課堂上睡覺。
4. 客氣有禮貌的用法
I was wondering whether you could go with me. 我想知道你是否能與我一起同
行。
